It’s no secret that one of the immediate sights to behold when you walk into Bargain Grocery at 1110 Lincoln Ave is the bounty of beautifully colored produce displays. Oranges, apples, bananas, artichokes, broccoli, an array of artisan lettuces; oh and what about those strange-looking veggies that we don’t know about?! We love to try new things, and showcase new things for our customers to try. Chicory, sun chokes, jicama, passion fruit?! When some of our shipments come in I can’t help but think where would we be without Google, and the millions of incredible food bloggers who are now educating us in an instant how to use natures bounty! Our customers are sometimes hesitant, but through the power of our Facebook account, we love to exchange ideas on how to cook and eat these beautiful veggies and fruits that were foreign to us just a few minutes before.
Being a non-profit grocery store, we learned very quickly that you can go anywhere and grab a sugar-laden bottle of soda, oily chips, or household staples like bread, eggs, and even milk! However, there’s not a lot of stores available within our city that someone with very little extra money to spend on feeding their families can go and get quality, wholesome, fresh produce to feed their families. We believe that everyone should have access to healthy food, especially nutrient rich fresh veggies and fruit and that’s evident when you shop with us.
We want to abolish the idea that it’s too expensive to eat healthy, but we also want our communities aware that food waste in America is a very real issue that affects us all! We have 12% of our population in our city going to bed hungry every night. We have children who shop in our store with their parents who have never seen a fresh carrot, cucumber, or an eggplant!
We exist to bring food accessibility and food equality, while also educating our communities on how to use nature’s most beautiful harvest.
